Choosing the Right DOWSIL™ Primer: PR-1200, 1200 OS, and PR-2260
Reliable silicone adhesion starts with the right primer. DOWSIL™ primers and prime coats are designed to enhance bonding of RTV and heat-cure silicones to a wide range of substrates, helping improve durability, expand design flexibility, and support consistent performance across demanding applications.
While many silicone formulations are designed to bond to common materials, certain substrates and environments require adhesion enhancement to achieve reliable, long-term performance. Primers and prime coats help promote stronger bonds on low-energy or difficult-to-bond surfaces and can improve resistance to environmental stressors such as moisture, temperature fluctuations, and vibration. Below are several DOWSIL™ primer and prime coat options, each designed for specific substrates and performance requirements.
DOWSIL™ PR-1200 RTV Prime Coat
A naphtha-based, general-purpose primer for use with silicone elastomers and RTVs. Designed to notably improve the adhesion of silicone sealants to challenging substrates, it performs well on granite, masonry, metal, aluminum, plastic, FR-4, and ceramic.
DOWSIL™ 1200 OS Primer
A highly versatile option, DOWSIL™ 1200 OS Primer enhances adhesion of many RTV and heat-cure silicones to metal, ceramic, FR-4, and plastic. Its low-VOC, low-odor formulation makes it well-suited for electronics and advanced assembly environments.
DOWSIL™ PR-2260 Prime Coat
Optimized for bonding silicones to metals, ceramics, and glass, with some plastic compatibility. It offers a longer shelf life of up to 24 months and is commonly used where stable adhesion to inorganic substrates is required.
All of these prime coats support stronger bonds on surfaces that are otherwise difficult for silicones to adhere to. Proper surface preparation is critical to achieving optimal adhesion. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of contaminants, and primers should be applied in a thin, even layer to avoid over-application, which can negatively impact bond performance.
